Is drifting in Forza Motorsport 3 necessary?

Yeah drifting looks pretty cool and i have been teaching myself to drift, yeah it takes a while finding the right car and that but does it really give you an upper hand in a race? because i have seen lots of people drifting round corners and i have just gone round normally and flew straight past them and got a faster accelerate than them after the corner putting me a good second or two ahead. Is drifting only effective once you have mastered it?Is drifting in Forza Motorsport 3 necessary?
Its necessary if done correctly. Those who have played the game a while would say the same. Fun, and if done on the corners instead of the actual road, it can win many races. I think it can be effective on cars with good acceleration but not good braking, some cars like my old one had to go round a corner like a snail, if i drifted the corners i would loose less speed. I cannot drift myself but some cars will perform better by drifting. Its not absolutely necessary, but to get certain achievements, it is. Drifting isn't so much about speed
